From the individual point of view, we are unable to hide from the adverse impact environment can bring to us. As a result, we will not be able to escape the negative impacts of environmental degradation that will affect our health and well-being.


How does environmental degradation undermine our living?


Environment degradation poses a great health threat to our living as it contaminates our living conditions in the manners of air, water and food. Such is hazardous to us as our physical bodies are unable to immunise against the germs and bacterias present in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. As a result, our immune system breaks down and causes much negative health effects that can be physically and mentally unbearable to individuals. This collapse in the individual’s well-being leads to the inability to properly function at home, school and work, therefore, creating problems in the fundamental livability of the person. According to Times magazine, environmental health experts said that pollution in 2015 was the contributing factor to the estimated nine million premature deaths worldwide - 16% of all deaths with majority of the deaths coming from air pollution.


How environmental degradation affects our medical expenses?


Additionally, the deterioration of our environment also causes substantial losses in the individual’s medical expenditure, creating negative externalities in the process. This is often attributed by poor management of personal health which warrants greater spending in personal healthcare. Such a deadweight loss generated by greater healthcare expenditure is detrimental to our daily life because it diminishes our extent of savings, personal expense and personal investments, leading to a fall in standard of living.

The environment is important as it not only impacts individual, but also social, economical and political.
